What to Expect from Your First Life Coaching Session

Starting something new is always a little uncertain. Here's exactly what to expect in your first life coaching session — so you can walk in (or log on) without anxiety.

Booking a first coaching session takes courage. Showing up — even to a video call — and saying 'I need help with something' is not a small thing. We want you to feel as prepared and comfortable as possible going in.

Here's an honest walkthrough of what your first session will look like.

Before the Session

You don't need to prepare anything special. You don't need to write down your goals or have a clear agenda. You just need to show up.

If you want to do something beforehand, you might ask yourself: What's been weighing on me lately? What am I hoping to get out of this? But even if you draw a complete blank, that's okay — your coach will help you find what's there.

The First Few Minutes

Your coach will introduce themselves and take a few minutes to make you feel comfortable. This isn't small talk for the sake of it — it's about establishing a sense of safety. A coaching relationship only works when you feel safe enough to be honest.

You might be asked a simple opening question: 'What brought you here today?' or 'What's most on your mind right now?' There are no wrong answers.

The Middle of the Session

This is where most of the coaching happens. Your coach will listen carefully and ask questions — not to interrogate you, but to help you hear yourself more clearly.

You might be surprised by what comes up. Sometimes people come in thinking they want to talk about one thing and discover that something else is at the heart of it. That's part of the process, and it's a good sign — it means something real is happening.

You will never be pushed to share more than you're ready to. A good coach follows your pace.

Wrapping Up

Near the end of the session, your coach will usually help you identify one or two things to take with you — an insight, a question to sit with, or a small action to take before your next session.

You'll also talk about whether continuing feels right, and what a next step might look like. There is no pressure to commit to anything. The session is yours.

After the Session

It's normal to feel a range of things after a first coaching session: lighter, energized, a little emotional, or like something has shifted even if you can't quite name it. It's also normal to feel a little raw if you touched on something tender.

Give yourself time to integrate. Take notes if something resonated. And know that what you're doing — reaching for support — is one of the bravest things a person can do.

The Willow Way Foundation offers free first sessions with no commitment required. If you're curious, the only thing you have to lose is a little bit of uncertainty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to prepare anything for my first coaching session?
No preparation is required. You don't need to write down goals, create an agenda, or have anything figured out. Just show up. Your coach will guide the conversation from wherever you are.
How long is a first life coaching session?
Most first sessions are 45–60 minutes. At the Willow Way Foundation, first sessions are free discovery calls that give you a real sense of the coaching relationship before committing to anything.
What if I get emotional during my coaching session?
That's completely okay and actually quite common in a first session. Coaching creates space for honesty, and honesty sometimes brings emotion. A skilled coach will hold that space gently and without judgment.
